What to do if you’re in an accident

In the unfortunate event that you’re in an accident, we’ve put a checklist together for you to keep in your car. A car accident can be stressful, and it’s easy to forget things.  Here are the things to do when you’re in a car accident.

  1. If you suspect injury to yourself or anyone traveling with you, immediately call 911 and indicate the need for medical assistance.
  2. If able, turn on hazard lights.
  3. Carefully get out of the car.  Remember, you’re probably still in traffic, and oncoming cars are still a threat.
  4. If another driver was involved, ensure that they are ok.  Do not discuss the accident with anyone at this point.
  5. If you haven’t called 911, do so and report the accident. Have your driver’s license, registration, and insurance information ready.
  6. Take photos of the area.
  7. If possible, move your car out of traffic and off to the side of the road.
  8. Obtain the following information from the other driver.
    1.   name and phone number
    2.   insurance company name, policy number and phone number
    3.   license plate number, and vehicle make, model and year.
