What You Need To Do

Remain calm, consistent and courteous. Everyone is shaken after an accident and a level head is very helpful!

Follow these instructions:

  1. Stop your car, but do not obstruct traffic if possible.
  2. Do not leave the scene of the accident.
  3. Get the police and medical help right away.
  4. Use your cell phone or get someone else to make
the call. In most U.S. towns, you can call 911.
  5. When police get at the scene be sure to:
  6. Tell them what exactly occurred.
  7. Follow their instructions.
  8. If you are able, write down the officer's name.
  9. Get a copy of the police accident report.
  10. Get this info from the other driver:
    • Name
    • Address
    • Telephone number
    • Their insurance company
    • Names and addresses of all passengers
    • License plate number
  11. Get the names, addresses, and phone numbers of all witnesses.
  12. Write down all the accident facts as soon as you can, and if possible make a drawing of the accident scene.
  13. Do not passively accept claim settlement at scene of accident.
  14. Call your insurance company at once to inform them of the car accident.
